SUFFOLK -- Fire destroyed a Suffolk home late Sunday.

A woman and her five-year-old son weren't in their Meadowlot Lane home when the fire started around 11:00 p.m., fire officials said.

Fire engulfed the two-story home and spread to four sheds and storage buildings. It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk Fire Marshal's Office.

The mother and child, who rented the home, are being helped by the Coastal Virginia Region of the American Red Cross.

Hank Hernly, who owns the home, lives next door and didn't know about the fire until his upstairs tenants told him about it.

'They saw it out the window. I was watching the football game and by the time we got around the side of the building, the whole thing was engulfed in flames. Thank goodness my renter was not here,' he said.

Hernly says the Fire Marshal's Office hopes to have a preliminary cause by Monday afternoon.
