VA BEACH - At the height of Hurricane Sandy's pass through Hampton Roads, the passenger vehicles were allowed to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

The nearly 18-mile span that connects Va. Beach to the Eastern Shore restricted was at Level 4 restrictions much of Monday. By Tuesday morning, that had been reduced to Level 2 and then to no restrictions.

'We opened the bridge to all traffic at 4:55 a.m.,' said spokesman Richard Bland.

Several Eastern Shore communities were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Accomack and Northampton counties have several roads were still closed Tuesday due to storm surge and downed trees.

The Va. Dept. of Transportation says its crews are working with A&N Electric Cooperative to clear the roadways as quickly as possible.
