NORFOLK - The third annual 'A Toast to the Heroes' gala will raise money for Wounded Wear, a Virginia Beach-based non-profit organization that helps wounded warriors and their families.
The February 9 event includes a wine tasting, silent auction and entertainment. Almost 100 items will be available for bidding during the silent auction, including one-of-a-kind artwork called 'Until it Hurts,' is valued at $20,000.
Created by self-taught and renowned artist Ellwood T. Risk, it honors fallen Navy SEALs since 9/11.On September 11, 2012, a Navy SEAL sniper fired a custom-built 300 Winchester Magnum at 911 yards 79 times (once for each fallen NSW member since 9-11), starting at 8:46 AM EST (Time of first plane into WTC), with the hole of each bullet marked for whom it was shot. Risk then took the target and did what he does best; turn targets into art, this time in honor of America's fallen SEAL brothers. 'Until it Hurts' will be available for auction online approximately two weeks prior to the event and will close at 10:30 PM EST Feb 9th at the Toast to the Heroes event.
Starting bids begin at $5,000.
A rifle signed by Navy SEAL Chris Kyle was to be included, but he was killed before that happened. However, an autographed copy of his book American Sniper will be auctioned.
The 2012 event raised $15,000 to create and distribute clothing kits to wounded warriors and raising awareness for their sacrifices. Organizers hope to double that this year.
