CHESAPEAKE -- In the first Christmas lights competition of its kind for television, the Holt family from Chesapeake, who transform their home for the holidays, will be competing against other families across the country.

The 'Great Christmas Light Fight' is a new competition series on ABC13 in which 20 families from across America will decorate their homes to the extreme for Christmas in ways that would certainly make even Clark Griswold envious with a total of $250,000 in prizing.

The 20 families in the competition were chosen through an extensive nationwide search, based on their previous elaborate Christmas light displays, incredible choreography and over-the-top designs.

Every year Allen and Cattina Holt of Chesapeake work hard to create Christmas displays for people of all ages to enjoy. They say they were flattered to be considered for the show.

'There are millions and millions of homes nationwide that do this. And to be one of 16 homes was just amazing,' Holt said.

Holt says they use LED lights so their electric bill only increases about $50.

'We probably have on the front of the house alone about 25,000 lights. The side of the house is lined double as tight as the front of the house. There's probably about 75,000 top, 100,000 lights total,' Holt said.

On Saturday nights Santa, Elma, Frosty and Buddy the Elf stop at the Holt home.

'We'll have lines wrapped all the way around the court down the street. And we pass out toys. We have a snow machine and the kids love to play in the snow and everything. It's just an experience that the kids get to come and sit on Santa's lap and just play,' Holt said.

'To see the kids faces. The parents love it but the kids just light up. I mean they'll see Santa in the window and they'll say 'I see him, I see him, I see him,'' Holt said.

You can see the Holt family tonight on 'The Great Christmas Light Fight' on ABC13 at 9 p.m.

Michael Moloney & Sabrina Soto from 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' will serve as judges for the series.
