5/22 UPDATE: Joe Lewis Thomas, 29, of Carrollton in Isle of Wight County is the second person charged in this case. He was arrested Wednesday night on charges of of murder, malicious wounding, shooting in an occupied dwelling, Robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, four counts of abduction and seven counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. An outstanding warrant for a probation violation was also served on Thomas, police said.
The search for the third suspect continues.
5/19 UPDATE: Jason Robles was arraigned in Newport News General District Court, according to online court records. His preliminary hearing is set for July 23.
UPDATE: 5/17 Jason Robles, 31, of Newport News was taken into custody Friday night, May 16, in the 15200 block of Warwick Boulevard. He's charged with murder, malicious wounding, robbery, abduction, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The investigation is considered ongoing.
NEWPORT NEWS -- One woman was killed and a second woman was injured after 3 people forced their way into an apartment early Saturday morning.
Newport News Police Department spokesman LouThurston said officers and medics responded to reports a shooting victim at a convenience store just before 4:00 a.m.
They found a 29-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to one of her arms at the store in the 2600 block of Jefferson Avenue. She told officers about a second gunshot victim at a nearby apartment.
That victim, a 32-year-old woman from NewportNews, died at the scene.
'It hurts a lot,' said Maria Fink, a neighbor and close friend of the victim. 'I've been praying for the kids.'
Fink says the deceased mother had 4 children.
Witnesses told police that both victims, 2 men, and 4 children were inside the apartment when there was a knock at the door.
3 men forced their way into the unit. A fight followed, then gunfire.
The 3 men ran.
The surviving gunshot victim as well as the others who were in the apartment headed to the convenience store.
Newport News Police will not release the name of the deceased at the request of the family.
