Live coverage of the McDonnell trial

RICHMOND -- Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms is expected to take the stand Tuesday afternoon to testify in the federal corruption trial against former Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen.

Sessoms, who is president of Towne Bank, originated a loan for the former first couple.

Prosecutors have charged the McDonnells with making false statements on their application for that loan, accusing them of not disclosing tens-of-thousands of dollars in loans the pair received from wealthy businessman Jonnie Williams.

As he walked into court on Tuesday, Sessoms seemed ready to get this investigation behind him.

'Well, I'm here,' he said with a sigh. 'You know, it's been coming for a number of months. I'm glad we're here. Let's get it over with.'

In opening statements at the start of the trial, attorneys for the McDonnells said that Sessoms and McDonnell are long-time friends and that he knew about the loan from Williams.

Sessoms acknowledged the deep relationship between he and Bob McDonnell as he walked into court.

'To sit back and say that it's not very concerning, I'd be lying,' he said. 'You know, there's a dear friend up there that is on trial and what I'm hearing is quite concerning.'
