HAMPTON -- Around 4:36 p.m. officials received a report of three boaters in the water underneath the East Mercury Boulevard Bridge that leads to Fort Monroe.

The boaters had attempted to seek refuge under the bridge after their 14 to 16 foot jon-boat overturned in Thursday evenings storms.

When crews arrived on the bridge, a fire officer wearing a flotation device was lowered by rope into the water and provided life jackets to two of the boaters.

Two were found hanging onto one of the bridge pylons. The third boater had managed to use a cooler to stay afloat and was able to climb out of the water on his own.

Rope tag lines were attached to the two boaters as firefighters and police guided them safely to shore.

Fire crews also removed the boat from the water.
