NEWPORT NEWS School bus drivers are desperately needed in Newport News.

The last school day for Newport News is Thursday, but the school system says the sooner it can train new drivers, there will likely be fewer glitches during the upcoming school year.

The school system needs another 60 drivers. Some drivers are retiring and some have accepted other jobs. 300 drivers are on the payroll.

Pay is $11.22 an hour plus benefits and training lasts two weeks.

'It's paid training and all we're looking for is people with a good driving record, someone who is interested in working with kids,' said Michelle Price with Newport News Schools.

Millicent Freeman has been a school bus driver for seven years and wishes she would have started sooner.

'I wish this is something I had done when I was raising my kids, because it would have given me an opportunity to spend more time with my kids,' said Freeman. 'Basically, I like kids, I like dealing with kids. You just got to have a lot of patience.'
