NORFOLK -- The Transportation Security Administration recognized Hampton Roads Transit for its work on establishing a strong security program for the region's transit services.

The TSA awarded HRT its 'Gold Standard,' or highest rating, on a program known as the Baseline Assessments for Security Enhancement.

The BASE program focuses on the fundamentals of transit security, including a review of an agency's security plans, security training, drills/exercise programs, public outreach efforts and background check programs.

'Our highest priority is to ensure that our passengers' commute is as safe and efficient as possible on all HRT services,' said HRT's Chief Safety and Security Officer Ron Edwards. 'We're honored that the TSA recognizes our efforts.'

As of December 2009, inspectors have completed more that 130 BASE assessments, covering most of the largest 100 agencies in passenger volume.
