WACHAPREAGUE -- Fire caused extensive damage to the Eastern Shore Laboratory of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

Spokesman Dave Malmquist said he got called around 5:00 a.m. and was told most everything inside the building was destroyed.

He said no one was injured and officials are working with investigators to determine how the fire started.

The VIMS Website says the lab serves as both a field station in support of research and teaching and as a site for resident research in coastal ecology and aquaculture.
