NEWPORT NEWS-- Police are looking for the person who shot an innocent bystander during a shooting in Newport News Tuesday.

Shots rang out just after 2:30 p.m. on the corner of Buxton Avenue and 19th Street.

Witnesses say people scattered, some of them running inside a neighborhood corner store.

Police say 48-year-old Everette Harrison tried to take cover in the store but was caught in the gunfire. Harrison was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors say Harrison used to ride his bike in the neighborhood, pulling a trailer and playing his radio.

An emotional Gloria Majette is the grandmother of the Harrison's son.

Visibly shaken, Majette said Harrison would 'always say 'Ms. G. I am not doing nothing. I'm staying out of trouble and I'm working on someones car.' He was always trying to work on someones car and he rides the bicycle.'

Police say they don't believe Harrison was the intended target and that the suspects sped off in a gun-blue metal color vehicle.

Anybody with information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
