SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY - A man taking a group of teenagers to Hampton University forHigh School Daywas killed when the charter bus they were in overturned in Southampton County Friday morning.

58-year-old Doval Emmanuel Watson and his wife Theresa, from Chapel Hill, were thrown from the bus when it went off the road around 7:00 a.m. He died at the scene; she was taken to hospital, along with six teens, age 13-17, and another adult.

Va. State Police say the driver of the Horizon Coach Lines charter bus from Chapel Hill, NC lost control and ran off the right side of Route 58 at Rt. 652 in Capron.

'The children all fine. They are waiting for parents to pick them up. One of the adults has been discharged and the other was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital,' Steve Ramey, Southampton Memorial Hospital's chief financial officer, told

Jackie Richardson drove from her home in Henderson, NC to get her 15-year-old daughter Autumn. She said youngsters had to crawl out through busted front windshield. They could see Mrs. Watson, whose arm was pinned under the bus,and her husband, who was crushed beneath it.

'I saw the man's legs sticking out from under the bus, but I tried not to look,' said Autumn.

The driver was still in his seat, her mom related.

Mrs. Watson was evaluated at Southampton Memorial and then flown by Life Evac helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. At first she was listed in critical condition in the burn trauma unit but was released from the hospital on Monday.

The students are from East Chapel High School, Carrboro High School, Vance County Early College and Southern Vance High School.

April Broadway with the Durham-Chapel Hill Chapter of the Hampton University Alumni Association said the Watsonsorganize this annual trip for local middle and high school students and they were along as chaperons. The bus left early this morning.

In a statement Friday afternoon, Hampton University said, 'The Hampton University community is extremely saddened to learn of the accident today involving the charter bus heading from Chapel Hill, N.C. to Hampton University for High School Day. We mourn the loss of accident victim and Hampton University alumnus Doval E. Watson. We pray for the recovery of the other victim of the crash.'

62-year-old Larry Brocks of Raleigh has been charged with reckless driving. Horizon Coach Lines is based in Seattle, Washington.

'Once the investigation is completed and consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney, other charges may be pending,' said Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Va. State Police.
