CURRITUCK CO.-- Police say a woman who alleged abuse and sexual assault by someone impersonating a police officer confessed Tuesday that she made the whole thing up.
Police say they found the alleged victim lying on the ground beside her vehicle on April 4. The woman said she was stopped along Hwy. 158 in Barco and asked to step out of her vehicle. Then, she said she was punched in the face and sexually assaulted.
The woman was transported to Albemarle Hospital and treated for her injuries.
Police say misinformation on social media sites complicated the case but investigators were able to prove inconsistencies and lies in the woman's story.
The woman has confessed that her story was fabricated and admitted that the injuries were self-inflicted.
Police did not release the name of the woman and charges have not yet been filed.
