NORFOLK - Hundreds of people flocked to the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk to celebrate Mother's Day, but about a half dozen of them returned to their vehicles Sunday to find valuables gone.

Spokesman Winfield Danielson says the zoo's security team is reviewing parking lot safety.

'This was unacceptable and we're at minimum going to have some more people keeping an eye on the parking lot for now,' he states..

Norfolk Police investigators haven't said if the cars were locked.

'Vehicle break-ins are crimes of opportunity,' explains police spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson.

Police remind owners to take valuables like packages and portable electronics with them when possible Otherwise, put them in trunk or in the locked glove compartment so they're not in sight. They also stress it's important to lock doors and close the windows.
