VIRGINIA BEACH-- Red flags are flying at the Oceanfront, alerting families of rough waters this holiday weekend.

'We don't recommend that people swim after dusk, but we know that people will be out there. We want to protect them the best we can,' Tom Gill of Virginia Beach lifesaving service said.

Starting Memorial Day weekend, an additional five lifeguards will be patrolling the beach. That means 15 guards will be working the resort area until about 8:30 p.m. 'We think this is a great addition to protect the people that do want to stay out there in the evening,' Gill remarked.

Last summer, four people died after drowning at the Oceanfront.
