NEWPORT NEWS--Police are hoping someone will come forward with information about a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a Newport News woman earlier this month.

Marcella Spain, 54, was killed as she walked across Hilltop Road around 9:00 p.m. on June 16.

Witnesses described the vehicle that struck her as a white pickup truck with an extended cab and a steel toolbox in the bed.

The next day, an attorney for the truck's owner called police to surrender the white truck, but that wasn't enough for police to press charges against the truck's owner, who's only been identified as a Newport News resident.

Master Police Officer DJ Pointer says under the advice from the Commonwealth Attorney, charges haven't been filed against the owner because they want to make sure they have an 'airtight case.'

Police are hoping witnesses will come forward to help identify the driver and detail what the driver was doing before and after the collision.

Anyone with information can call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
