VIRGINIA BEACH-A man wanted forassaulting a Va. Beach police officer Tuesday turned himself in that night, telling 13News Now he had to 'handle some business' before he could go to jail.

28-year-old Stanley Durkowski assaulted the officer during a traffic stop on W. Plantation Road around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, said MPO Tonya Borman.

He ran off and officers searched the Hilltop area, looking in areas near a canal, a cemetery and through several neighborhoods throughout the day. A police helicopter, K-9 units, motorcycle and patrol cars were involved in the search.

The officer was treated for minor injuries.

From jail Wednesday, Durkowski said he distracted police and kept running.

'It's not the first time I've ran, but it's the first time they've chased me to that extent,' Durkowski said. 'To be honest, I'm surpised they couldn't catch me.'

Borman said Durkowski wasn't wanted for a violent offense and officers are unsure why he may have assaulted the officer.

A neighbor in the Point O' Woods subdivision says Durkowski is a member of the civic league and is a groundskeeper for many in the area. She described him as 'a very nice and polite man' who even walks her dog.

Durkowski made several posts on the Point O Woods facebook page Tuesday.

'I will also be putting in a formal complaint on these officers then suing for slander due to i have a reputation to uphold,' he wrote.

Durkowski turned himself around 8:30 p.m. and was charged with Felony Assault of a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest, Borman added.

Since he doesn't qualify for a public defender, there will not be a bond hearing until Durkowski gets an attorney, officials said. He is scheduled to go to court on September 4.
