NEWPORT NEWS-- A woman who struck a pedestrian and a car on Bland Boulevard was distracted by her children in the car, according to police.

Police spokesperson, Lou Thurston, told Tuesday night that charges are pending.

A man was struck and killed Wednesday evening while trying to help people in a disabled vehicle.

The accident happened around 8:11 p.m. in the 12,500 block of Bland Boulevard on the overpass.

22-year-old Richard Steven Shomette of Yorktown had stopped to help two women and three juveniles in that disabled vehicle when a van driven by a woman slammed into them.

Shomette and the two women were taken to the hospital, where the Shomette later died.

The three juveniles were unhurt.

The woman driving the van and her two children were not injured.

'I wish I could've met him. To me he's a hero because he really helped my girls out. From what my daughter was telling me how things went, he pretty much pushed her out the way from what she was telling me,' said Valerie Robinson. 'I'm sorry that things happened the way it did. He's a hero to me. I'm going to always think about him.'

The accident closed the area to traffic for several hours.

The investigation continues and police say the Crash Reconstruction Team Officer will be consulting with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office about possible charges.
