NEWPORT NEWS -- More than 1,400 people attended a job fair at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News Thursday.
Thirty companies participated in the event sponsored by the Newport News Department of Human Services.
'Each and every one of the employers have openings, legitimate jobs,' said organizer Sharon Goodwin.
About half as many people attended two previous events, Goodwin said.
Tavon Best of Hampton admitted at first he was intimidated by the long lines and the crowd.
'I started thinking about how this might help me further my career and how I might be able to find stability', Best said. That helped him calm down.
The city is planning another job fair this Spring in Denbigh.
