PORTSMOUTH-Several people were taken to the hospital after a two-vehicle crash on the Western Freeway (Rt. 164) in Portsmouth early Thursday.

The crash blocked the roadway at Cedar Lane for nearly two hours.

Det. Jan Westerbeck tells a speeding Pontiac hit a Ford Explorer that was disabled on the side of the road around 6:15 a.m.

'The Explorer flipped, pinning the occupants inside. They were gotten out by fire crews,' she said.

Westerbeck says the car's driver will face a charge of reckless driving.

The number of people who were hurt and their conditions wasn't immediately known.

The road, which is a main route into the Midtown Tunnel, was closed for rescue crews and police, catching hundreds of drivers in the backup.

Wreckers arrived and removed the cars, allowing the road to reopen just before 8:00 a.m.
