NEWPORT NEWS -- It will soon be time to put away the winter coats and don your shorts and deck shoes and hit the water. As you prepare your boat, don't forget to brush up on safety at sea skills.

That's the focus of an all-day seminar on Saturday, February 22 at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News. It will provide novice and experienced mariners with the information and skills required to sail the Chesapeake Bay or offshore, handle heavy weather, conduct rescue procedures and much more.

The seminar is from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to all cruising and racing skippers, crews and their families, recreational boaters and commercial fishermen.

Topics to be discussed include:
Formula for Disaster - lessons learned
Over-board & rescue
Medical care & prevention
Damage Control
Pumps & steering gear emergencies
Bay weather & Life raft inflation
Abandon ship procedures
