NORFOLK -- Doctors at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk are tracking which drugs are now resistant to the illnesses they're meant to treat.

Hampton Roads hospitals report more and more infections are resistant to powerful drugs, caused primarily by the overuse of antibiotics, says Dr. Stephen Beuscher.

Professor of Internal Medicine Dr. Nancy Khardori says knowing what drugs are likely to be more effective will help physicians make a better first choice for treating their patients. She also says that also should lower the overall number of antibiotics prescribed in Hampton Roads.

According to Beuscher, the goal now is find ways to convince pharmaceutical companies to create new, fast-acting antibiotics, which is expensive to do.
