NORFOLK -- New research encourages parents of babies to use the '5 S's.'

Dr. Harvey Karp describes the 5 S's in his DVD and his book, 'The Happiest Baby on the Block.'

The 'S's' are: Swaddle, hold them on their Side or Stomach, Shushing, Swinging, and Sucking.

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters pediatrician John Harrington tested it on 260 babies and found significant success. The hospital even uses the techniques to train pediatric residents.

A new study in the journal Pediatrics shows the '5 S's' can also be used to soothe babies after they receive immunizations. Some say it can replace the traditional over-the-counter pain reliever or sugar which previous studies showed to be an effective pain reliever.

Dr. Harrington likes the idea of teaching parents something they can do and something that's not comfort food.

The one drawback, according to Dr. Harrington, is that babies tend to outgrow these techniques as they get bigger.
