PORTSMOUTH--Portsmouth police have arrested the caretaker of a toddler who was injured on Monday.
On Tuesday, detectives arrested 22-year-old Kerneisha Phoebe Adolphus, of the 800 block of Crawford Parkway in Portsmouth, and charged her with aggravated malicious wounding.
According to Portsmouth Police spokeswoman Jan Clark, police and medics were dispatched to the apartment on Crawford Parkway on Monday, Jan. 21, after a 911 caller indicated the child had fallen.
When medics arrived they say the girl was not breathing. She was immediately transported to the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughter and is currently in critical condition.
Adolphus and one male at the home told police they were babysitting the child at the time. They also told police they aren't related to the girl but have been the caretakers since mid-December.
Clark says a medical examination determined the injuries were not consistent with what was reported to police and said the girl suffered trauma to her body.
The biological mother is en route to Portsmouth from out of state.
The investigation is ongoing.
