PORTSMOUTH - A three-month-old girl was badly burned after apparently rolling off a bed and onto a baseboard heater, Portsmouth Police said.

She was taken to the hospital from the Davis Street home Sunday morning and doctors found second- and third-degree burns to her head, face, hands, her leg and foot, according to spokeswoman Det. Jan Clark.

According to investigators, the baby and a four-year-old were being cared for by their grandparents while their mother went to work.

Just before 11:00 a.m., the grandmother went into a bedroom to check on the baby, who had been sleeping on a regular bed. The infant was found between the bed and wall on top of a heater, Clark stated.

The little girl is being treated at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk.

The sibling is being treated for a burn to her arm. Police say they are working to determine how that injury occurred.

Detectives with the Portsmouth Police, Special Victims Unit and Child Protective Services were investigating. No charges have been placed.
