NEWPORT NEWS - Nearly 10,000 homes and businesses on the Peninsula were without power for a couple of hours Tuesday.

Dominion Virginia Power says a squirrel got into one of its substations, which knocked out power to many areas of Hampton and Newport News. Most of the outages were in the Warwick and Aberdeen areas, said Bonita Harris.

'Our crews are isolating the problem and restoring customers incrementally. We expect the lights back on for almost everyone by mid-morning,' she stated.

The outage affected the Newport News Police headquarters, which is operating on generator power, and four schools - Sedgefield Elementary and Warwick High School in Newport News and Tucker-Capps and Aberdeen elementaries in Hampton.

'The power has been restored to Warwick and Gatewood PEEP (on the campus of Warwick HS and Sedgefield. There was minimal impact on the students and staff,' said Schools spokeswoman Michelle Price.
