NEW KENT COUNTY -- New Kent High School sophomore linebacker Jacob Vick died during the Trojans varsity football practice on Tuesday, according to the Daily Press.

New Kent football coach Dan Rounds told the newspaper he did not know the cause of Vick's death.

According to the newspaper, Rounds said Vick collapsed at practice Tuesday afternoon. He was flown to a Richmond hospital, where he died.

New Kent schools superintendant Dr. Rick Richardson commented on the loss in a prepared statement:

'On behalf of the New Kent School Board and school community, may I offer my sincerest condolences to the family of our New Kent student. We can only imagine the extent of the grief they are experiencing through this very tragic loss.

'Out of deep respect for the family's privacy, and consistent with their request, I will have no further comments nor will I answer any questions at this time.

'I am, however, asking for your full cooperation in respecting the family's wishes by withholding any questions or interview requests for the family, as well as any questions directed towards our students or staff.

'Thank you in advance for granting the respect due this family's request for privacy.'
