NEWPORT NEWS--Six people were arrested after shots were fired as police tried to attempts to serve a warrant Thursday night.

Around 7:10 p.m., detectives were at a room house in the 2000 block of Chestnut Avenue. Police say gunfire came from inside the house, so two officers each fired one shot as officers went for cover and then set up a perimeter around the residence.

A second search warrant was obtained and served with the help of the SWAT team. Authorities say they found a large amount of crack cocaine in the room identified in the search warrant and they recovered two handguns.

No injuries were reported. However, one of the detectives involved in the incident checked his equipment and found a bullet lodged in his bullet-resistant vest.
