ELIZABETH CITY-- Sam Beamon, the chief of University Police at Elizabeth City State University has resigned.

Word came of the former chief's resignation in a statement from the university Friday evening.,

John Manley, the interim police chief, will continue to head the police department, the statement said.

ECSU also announced that it had initiated a partnership with the Elizabeth City Police Department through a mutual assistance agreement.

Manley, a retired Rocky Mount Chief of Police, became interim chief May 3rd.

Beamon was placed on leave as state investigators reviewed a complaint of witness intimidation and obstruction of justice at the university.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported that the State Bureau of Investigation was looking into allegations surrounding a sexual battery incident at a dorm room at Butler Hall.

Anthony Butler Jr. was charged in the incident. He was a temporary residence security officer and volunteer women's basketball coach.

University of North Carolina System spokeswoman Joni Worthington said school officials reported the incident to state authorities.

Manley served with the Rocky Mount Police Department for 32 years, including seven years (2004-2011) as Chief of Police.
