NORFOLK -- A man attempting to cross the tracks in Norfolk was hit by a train Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The man was hit at 23rd Street and Monticello Ave. around 3 p.m.

According to Norfolk Southern spokesperson Robin Chapman, the man stepped out in front of the train just as it was passing.

He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The train consisted of six locomotives and was going from Lamberts Point to Portlock Yard in Chesapeake. The track speed is 25 mph, Chapman said. It is unclear the speed of the train.

The incident is being investigated by Norfolk Southern.
