VIRGINIA BEACH -- Cecilia Cornelius of Virginia Beach spotted a tick on her leg while in the shower last May. She went to a doctor who said it was not a tick that carries Lyme disease.
Six days later, Cecilia started feeling sick and was convinced she had been infected.
Lyme disease is an infection carried by deer ticks. Untreated, the bacterium travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in various body tissues, and can cause a number of symptoms, some of which are severe.
'I met a couple on the beach who knew everything about Lyme disease,' said Cornelius. 'They told me I needed to go to an expert in Washington DC at The Jemsek Clinic,' added Cornelius.
Over the course of the next six months, Cecilia and her four children were diagnosed with Lyme disease and are now being treated.
She believes she may have been dealing with the disease for years.
'I want to get my story out there so people can understand what Lyme disease feels like, what you can do to prevent it and where support groups are located,' concluded Cornelius.
