CHESAPEAKE -- Fire swept through a townhouse in Chesapeake early Friday.

Flames were coming from a two-story home in the 1800 block of Carrollwood Common, in the Greenbrier area, when firefighters arrived just before 1 a.m.

Captain Scott Saunders says the smoke alarm sounded, alerting the homeowner to the fire. He got out safely and is staying with friends, Saunders added.

It took about 30 minutes for the fire to be deemed under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
