UPDATE 4/9: James Brooks was sentenced Wednesday to 35 years in prison for second degree murder and use of a firearm.

UPDATE 2/27: James Jerome Brooks was found guilty by a jury of second degree murder and use of a firearm. The judge will formally sentence Brooks on April 7.

According to he Commonwealth's Attorney, Brooks shot Laurie Escobar because he believed her to be a drug informant.

Brooks is currently serving seven years in prison for charges of unlawful wounding, abduction, and use of a firearm, stemming from an incident about a month before the murder. He also has prior convictions for charges of possession of a firearm by felon, possess firearm while possessing cocaine, distribute schedule I/II substance, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and possession of cocaine.

Police say 36-year-old Laurie Ann Escobar was singled out by the shooter, who got into the 16th Street home around 1:15 a.m. After firing several shots, the person ran off.

Escobar was found in the back of the home and pronounced dead at the hospital, police stated.

People living in the area are nervous that such a violent crime happened in their neighborhood.
