ELIZABETH CITY-- A major shake-up is unfolding on the campus of Elizabeth City State University as the chancellor, Dr. Willie Gilchrist calls it quits.

Gilchrist's resignation comes one week after Sam Beamon, the campus police chief, stepped down.

Beamon was placed on leave as state investigators reviewed a complaint of witness intimidation and obstruction of justice at the university.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported that the State Bureau of Investigation was looking into allegations surrounding a sexual battery incident at a dorm room at Butler Hall.

Gilchrist says his decision to leave is in the best interests of ECSU and says he's looking forward to spending more time with his family.

According to a release, Gilchrist is a graduate of ECSU and spent 40 years in public education. He served as a teacher, counselor, principal, and school superintendent before entering higher education administration. He was named interim chancellor of ECSU in September 2006 and served as chancellor since March 2007.

The school says an interim chancellor will be picked in the coming weeks before a permanent replacement is hired.
