VIRGINIA BEACH --A new toll structure begins in the new year for people who drive the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

The commission in August agreed to the approximately 10% hike effective January 1, 2014.

The toll rate adjustment is necessary to help fund the construction of the Thimble Shoal Parallel Tunnel Project that has already been approved by the commission.

According to the release, the new toll rate schedule utilizes a peak season pricing methodology and includes additional round trip discounting for other classes of vehicles to minimize the impact on local citizens.

The proposed round trip rate for passenger vehicles only increases by $1 and the recently approved $5 commuter rate (30 one-way trips in 30 days) is preserved.

Also, all toll discounts offered by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel will be for E-ZPass Customers only.
