NORFOLK--A fifth Norfolk-based destroyer has arrived in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, a Navy spokesperson told 13News Now Thursday.

The guided-missile destroyer Stout left Norfolk earlier this year on a regularly scheduled deployment. According the Navy, the destroyer is expected to relieve one of four ships currently on patrol near the coast of Syria.

The guided-missile destroyers Gravely, Mahan, Ramage and Barry are all stationed in the eastern Mediterranean, positioned within striking distance of Syria, a Navy spokesperson told 13News Now Tuesday.

The U.S. military stands ready to strike Syria at once if President Barack Obama gives the order, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Tuesday as the United States prepared to formally declare that chemical weapons had been used in Syria's civil war.
