VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Beach city council members are weighing options to fight flooding on Shore Drive.

The area from Shore Drive, east of the Lesner Bridge, to First Landing Park can become flooded after moderate rain, leaving residents in a nearby neighborhood underwater.

The city manager briefed council on possible remedies Tuesday.

Improved pipe systems and stormwater pump stations are a couple of the options, but because the system was never in place to begin with, construction costs will be higher.

'They need to do something with all this growth around here,' said Shore Drive resident Ralph Hall. 'The situation with the water isn't going anywhere.'

The design phase for the project is expected to be complete sometime this fall.
