NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News father has been arrested for allegedly injuring his infant.
According to Newport News Police spokesman Lou Thurston, 24-year-old Joseph Wayne Barkley of the 300 block of 49th Street told officers Wednesday his 8-month-old baby boy fell from a bed.
Barkely told police the child then continued to passing out and began to vomit.
Thurston said the child was taken by medics to a local hospital and then transferred by air ambulance to Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk.
Barkley has been arrested and charged with one count each of malicious assault and felony child neglect and is being held in the Newport News City Jail without bond.
The child's mother has not been charged, Thurston said.
