NEWPORT NEWS Newport News police continued searching late Sunday for the gunmen responsible for the death of a 71-year-old from Hampton.

The victim was driving his minivan up 33rd Street just before 3:30 p.m. Sunday when police say he got caught in the middle of a shootout between 2 people at the intersection of Marshall Avenue.

Witnesses told police the victim's Honda rolled for several yards before winding up in the front yard of a house.

'He's bleeding. He's got blood all over his nose. He's got blood coming from his mouth. Blood starts trickling out his ear,' explained an anonymous homeowner who tried helping the victim.

When paramedics and police arrived, the 2 shooters were nowhere to be seen.

The 71-year-old died at the hospital.

'Now some family is worried about their loved one, and you know, you just have these young people shooting up, no reason,' a neighbor said.

By late Sunday night, Newport News Police Department had not released the name of the victim, as officers worked to contact his family.
