VIRGINIA BEACH -- The Oceanfront in Virginia Beach may soon become home to a giant state-of-the-art Ferris wheel.
Koch Development, a St. Louis-based firm, is hoping to bringThe 200-foot contraptionto the resort area, according to Warren Harris with the city's Department of Economic Development.
SkyWheel Virginia Beach would be located on 17th Street between Atlantic Avenue and the Boardwalk.
The proposed attraction would be equiped with 42 glass-enclosed gondolas, Harris said. The ride would also include a led lightshow to dazzle the night's sky.
Three revolutions would cost about $14 for adults and $8 for children.
If approved by the Virginia Beach City Council, construction would begin sometime in the fall and would open for rides by the summer of 2015.
Koch Development is prepared to invest about $12 million in the project. The company estimates the waterfront attraction could entertain as many as 500,000 passengers each year.
