5/21 UPDATE: Military officials have identified the servicemember as Lance Corporal Steven M. Hancock with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204.
'I want to pass along our sincere thanks to all who assisted us in recovering Lance Cpl. Hancock,' said Major General Robert Hedelund, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general. 'While the details surrounding the incident are under investigation, we continue to ask that everyone keeps this Marine's family, and all those affected by this tragedy, in their thoughts and prayers. This tragedy affects us all -- his family and friends, his extended Marine family, and the community who provided selfless support during this tragic event.'


5/20 UPDATE: The Marine's body was found late Tuesday afternoon. Marine Corps officials say it appears he died as a result of the fall.

Those participating in the search efforts include 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing helicopters and Ospreys based at MCAS New River; and search and rescue helicopters from Marine Transport Squadron 1 out of MCAS Cherry Point. Local civilian fire and rescue units include: Bladen County Sheriff and Emergency Medical Service personnel, White Lakes Police and Fire Departments, Bay Tree Lakes Fire Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol, North Carolina Forest Service and State Parks personnel.


BLADEN CO., NC -- The search continues in North Carolina for a Marine who fell out of an Osprey during training around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Officials at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point say crews and emergency workers are combing through the woods in Bladen County.

It happened approximately 45 miles west of Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C.

There was no information about how the training mission or the circumstances that led to the Marine's fall.

The Marine was a crewmember of the MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft that was conducting a training flight at the time of the mishap.

While the cause of the mishap is under investigation, our first priority is to locate our missing comrade, officials said in a news release Tuesday.
