UPDATE: The toddler, Angel Vasquez, died from his injuries around 10 p.m. Thursday, according to Newport News police.
Witnesses said the boy climbed over the porch railing of his home before crossing the street, possibly to a nearby playground. Police were looking into whether the boy was being supervised, but have determined there was no negligence by the boy's parents.
The investigation continues.

NEWPORT NEWS -- A 2 1/2-year-old boy was hit by a car in front of the Doris Miller Community Center in Newport News Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Police tell 13News Now a woman driving an SUV had stopped for a red light at 28th and Wickham Ave. They say when the light turned green, the woman drove about halfway down the block when she hit the toddler.
The child was transported to Sentara Norfolk General. His condition is unknown.
Police say an investigation is underway, including whether or not there was adequate adult supervision.
