NORFOLK -- Doctors at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk are excited about using a new, state-of-the-art MRI and how it will help them help sick children.

The 3 Tesla MRI is the most powerful scanner available in routine clinical use, officials said.

Physicians say they'll get sharper images of extremely small structures in the foot or hand and detailed images of soft tissue damage such as lesions in the cartilage. It will help them in diagnosing some spine injuries and can produce images of brain structures to help diagnose conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

CHKD officials say the new machine will reduce wait times for MRIs-whether with the new 3T or the existing 1.5T.

Walmart stores in Hampton Roads gave a million dollars towards the cost.
