VIRGINIA BEACH -- It's just a drill -- two helicopters collide, there are many casualties, but first responders and the Navy are treating Thursday's drill like it's real.

It began at 8:45 a.m. on Camp Pendleton State Military Reservation in Virginia Beach.

Emergency services personnel and vehicles from the Navy, two Sentara hospitals, the National Guard and more are working near the corner of South Birdneck Road and General Booth Blvd.

The Navy and Virginia Beach worked together in April 2012 when a Navy jet crashed into one building of Mayfair Mews apartments shortly after taking off from NAS Oceana. 40 apartments were either damaged or destroyed, but no one was killed.

Officials with the Navy and the city cited their joint training as one reason the response went so well.
