RICHMOND (AP) -- 607 acres of the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach are off limits to shellfishing effective today, April 12.

The closing based on fecal coliform concentrations affects oysters and clams but not crabs or fin fish. The Virginia Department of Health says the closure is based on a general degradation of the area rather than an imminent health hazard.

Announcing the closure earlier this month allowed the Marine Resources Commission to post the new area and notify harvesters. An imminent health hazard would result in an immediate closure.
