WEST POINT--A storm rumbled across New Kent, Gloucester and Mathews counties Thursday night.

Of the three localities, only New Kent reported some trees and wires down.

in West Point, the steeple of the First Baptist Church on Main Street was struck by lightning. Someone noticed the bell tower had been struck around 6 p.m.

In addition to fire damage to the tower, there was water damage on the first and second floors.

According to firefighters, several lightning strikes were apparent in the area, possibly leading to the fire at the church.

Damage was estimated to be $75, 000.

About 150 people attend First Baptist which has stood in West Point for about a century.

It was not immediately known if upcoming services would be affected.
