1:30pm UPDATE: The man who died has been identified as 30-year-old Jason Oliver Reeves of the 200 block of Brooke Drive.

NEWPORT NEWS- Police say alcohol and speed led to a deadly crash in Newport News early Wednesday.

It happened around 1:35 a.m. at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Diligence Drive.

Police say witnesses saw the car speeding and then hit the curb, said spokesman Lou Thurston.

'It hit with enough force that the pole landed approximately 30 feet away. The car came to rest with a second pole midway through the passenger area,' Thurston stated.

The driver was killed; the passenger, a 31-year-old Hampton man, was taken to the hospital.

The names of the victims haven't been released.
