UPDATE 6:45 p.m.: NCDOT crews are heading out as snow is now covering the roads. Officials ask drivers to stay off the roads unless it is an emergency.

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.: A State of Emergency has been declared for Elizabeth City/Camden County/Pasquotank County. They are activating their emergency operations center, which will be manned 24/7 until the storm is cleared.

UPDATE 3 p.m.: North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory declared a State of Emergency throughout the state ahead of the winter storm.

Executed under the Emergency Management Act, the State of Emergency declaration enables the governor to mobilize the necessary resources to respond to a storm. It also is the first step in seeking federal funds to help defray the cost of providing emergency services, clearing debris and repairing any damaged public infrastructure.

UPDATE 1:40 p.m.: Christy Saunders, the emergency manager for Elizabeth City/Camden County/Pasquotank County tells 13News Now's NickOchsner that she expects they will declare a state of emergency for the area by the end of the day.

Dare County officials tell 13News Now they have not yet discussed the possibility of declaring a state of emergency.


MOYOCK, NC -Residents in Northeastern North Carolina are use to preparing for hurricanes, but snow storms are not thenorm here. Turns out many of the same precautions and preparations taken during a hurricane are ones that work for preparing for a snow storm too.

Cheryl Johnson Was filling up her gas tank ahead of the snow early Tuesday. She says she's prepared.

'I've got all the groceries, extra water, extra milk, extra bread and extra dog food,' she stated.

Clarence McPherson was not as prepared for last week's storm as he would have liked. So this time around, he says he is not taking any chances.

'I've got my shovel, my broom and everything already out there on the porch. So I'm ready for it this time,' he stated.

No matter how much snow the area gets, everyone at the Border Station says once it starts snowing they plan to head indoors, keep warm and use up some of the supplies they've stocked up on.
