GATES COUNTY --- Two boaters were killed after their boat sank Saturday afternoon in the Chowan River.

Sheriff Edward Webb told 13News Now that dispatchers were alerted around 3:00 p.m.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission was first on the scene and located debris that may have been from the boat.

Around 6:00 p.m. rescue crews recovered the body of Ervin Hedgepath and continued to look for the second boater until it became too dark.

Search efforts were resumed Sunday morning around 8 a.m.

The body of the second boater was recovered at approximately 11:15 a.m.

He has been identified as Herman Wayne Greene of Gatesville.

Sheriff Webb advised that the incident was being investigated by the North Carolina Wildfire Resources Commission.
