NORFOLK -- Planters is donating 5,760 jars of peanut butter to foodbanks in Hampton Roads and five others in Virginia to celebrate National Peanut Month.
Virginia's peanut farmers teamed up with Planters to donate four pallets of peanut butter to the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, a partner state association of Feeding America.
Leslie Van Horn, executive director of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, says peanut products are nutritionally beneficial, packed with protein, vitamins, minerals, folate and other benefits for the body.
She said Friday's donation is badly needed.
'This donation comes at the perfect time, when our shelves are pretty bare - our heartfelt thanks to Virginia's peanut farmers and Planters for helping us fill the gap,' she said.
Dell Cotton, executive director of the Virginia Peanut Growers Association, added, ' I hope this contribution from our farmers and Planters will challenge others to give at a time when our Food Banks need some help. Peanut butter is on their list of needed items, and is a product that can help supply many meals to those in need'.
